Bush Hamdan: Kentucky ‘working on’ two-quarterback packages for Gavin Wimsatt

New Kentucky Wildcats offensive coordinator Bush Hamdan is installing his offense ahead of the start of the regular season. That includes potential two-quarterback packages.

As Hamdan explained to reporters, the goal of a two-quarterback package would be to get Gavin Wimsatt on the field.

“I think so,” Bush Hamdan said. “I think, again, you’re able to see during that last practice some of the things that he’s able to do. We think he’s one of the best ball carriers as well. So, it’s on us to be creative, making sure it’s a package he can handle but he can but he can also get in and being the full-time quarterback if needed there, and it’s something we’re working on.”

Going into the 2024 season, Georgia transfer Brock Vandagriff is expected to be the starter for Kentucky. He’s a five-star recruit from the Class of 2021 when he was the fourth-ranked quarterback in the country, according to the On3 Industry Ranking. However, he struggled to get on the field at Georgia behind a deep and talented QB room.

For his part, Gavin Wimsatt is an athletic quarterback who began his career at Rutgers. He also transferred into the program following the 2023 season. He played 13 games last season and had plenty of success, particularly on the ground.

Certainly, this isn’t the first time Gavin Wimsatt has been on a roster where there are multiple capable quarterbacks. Finding a way to take advantage of those players is going to be important. It’s also going to be important to figure out that balance quickly, with two SEC opponents in the first three games of the season.

Brock Vandagriff praises Gavin Wimsatt for what he has brought to Kentucky quarterback room

It could be easy for two transfer quarterbacks, like Brock Vandagriff and Gavin Wimsatt to have a competitive relationship. Still, Vandagriff has praised Wimsatt for everything he’s brought to the quarterback room.

“Gavin is awesome. He’s another great dude to have in the quarterback room,” Vandagriff said.

“He takes his reps serious when he’s in there. We’re all learning from each other. He was a great addition for the quarterback room. Me, Beau [Allen], and Cutter [Boley] really appreciated him and the stuff he has done for us.”

It will be the third season in a row with a new starting quarterback at Kentucky once the season starts with a home game against Southern Miss on August 31st.
